About Hull's Haven Border Collie Rescue

In the Words of Sally Hull

Years ago, I researched the Border Collie as a potential breed of puppy to buy. What I read astounded me. I had become enamoured of the breed once I brought home my first pup, Frodo. I discovered that all things they said about the breed were true: Brilliant, devoted, full of energy, always wanting to work and please. Soon after, there was another pup, Muna.

What I sadly began to find out was that this amazing breed is forever in trouble... purchased as puppies because "they are smart and easy to train", then tossed aside like garbage. Many are not looked after, their energies not managed properly. A bored Border Collie is not a happy Border Collie. The problem with intelligent breeds is that if you don't use their minds, they will become destructive. That is when I decided I wanted to make a difference.

My first rescue was Freckles.

My initial intention was to foster her... but instead I fell deeply in love, and found it impossible to let her go. I began doing more work with fundraising for other rescues and helping rehome dogs with networking.

I then met a wonderful rescuer named Shahna Rice, who inspired me to delve into rescue and the rest, they say, is history.

It has been a learning experience and I have made many mistakes along the way, but rescue has become a passion, my life's dream. I have met some amazing people and even more amazing dogs in this work. It is always my hope to inspire others to help these voiceless innocents who suffer needlessly.

HHBCR got its start in December 2006 and since then we have rescued close to 600 dogs. I have been deeply blessed with good friends who have joined in the battle and share my vision. HHBCR is not one person. HHBCR is MANY people. From the amazing foster homes who take in these abandoned dogs, to the people who donate, help transport, help with numerous fundraisers, run the website and many many other necessary aspects of the rescue behind the scenes. HHBCR is also the vet clinics and veterinarians who care for our dogs, and help us with advice and all our medical needs.

The volunteers are the life blood of HHBCR. Without these wonderful, dedicated people, HHBCR would not be a thriving entity.

To each one of you, I extend my eternal gratitude.

There is one person in particular I want to say thank you to. Her name is Ruth, she is my best friend, and now my partner in the rescue. She not only shares my vision, she explores all the possibilities of what it could be, and makes it a reality. She keeps my feet on the ground when I am losing my footing, and kicks me in the backside when I need it. Which is often.

Ruth and Don

Thank you, all of you who walk this path with me. Thank you for sharing my dream. Thank you for helping save these precious lives.
