What does it take to be a foster home for HHBCR?

Physical conditions for the dog:

Comfortable indoor home (dog standards, we're not talking the Hilton here)
A fully fenced yard
Exercise time - walking, running, swimming, Frisbee, etc.
Some training or retraining if necessary
Rules, boundaries and limitations
Transportation to and from veterinary appointments

Personal skills should include:

Some knowledge of dog behaviour
Some experience with dog handling
The ability to love and let go
The understanding that each of your charges are perfect in their imperfections
The ability to work with a team for the welfare of the dog in spite of personal feelings
The ability to organize, process and provide paperwork (small amount usually)
The ability to handle frustration when your charge doesn't understand what is required of him/her
Willingness to be a part of the process of placing your charge in a new forever home

Foster Home Agreement

Please read the following agreement carefully:

HHBCR Commitment

HHBCR is committed to re-homing the dogs in our care into the best possible permanent situation for the individual dog. Therefore we must take into consideration the temperament, energy level and health of the dog we are placing, along with the situation of the home into which we are placing the dog. Our foster system is the final step in the process of getting rescued dogs into their forever homes.

To that end HHBCR will endeavour to match foster dogs with foster homes for the safety of all concerned. HHBCR will provide for the needs of the foster dogs while in the care of the foster home. We provide food, veterinary care, training aids and advice, crates, toys, bedding, etc.

As a foster home for HHBCR, it is recognized that you are in a unique position to assess the needs of a dog that has been in your care in as far as health, temperament and a future home are concerned. Your input is valued and will be taken into serious consideration.

However, all dogs in foster homes remain the property and responsibility of HHBCR. This means that HHBCR retains the final say in veterinary care and placement of the dog(s) into alternate foster homes or into their new adoptive home. All paperwork and payment pertaining to the dog is also considered to be the property of HHBCR. As such, it must be returned to HHBCR in a timely fashion when requested along with any equipment that has been loaned to the foster home for the health, welfare, safety, housing and training of the dog.

Foster Commitment

As a foster home I agree to:
  1) provide for the welfare of the dog in your care including
    a) a clean, temperature appropriate, safe environment
    b) feeding and watering according to our guidelines - picking up of dog food provided by HHBCR unless
       otherwise arranged,
    c) administering of medications as required and transportion of the dog to and from veterinary
       appointments unless otherwise arranged,
  2) train the dog to the level of time and expertise that I have as agreed upon,
  3) provide updated information on health, training, behaviour, etc. to the HHBCR foster home coordinator,
  4) make the dog available to potential adopters,
  5) provide the adopter, on relinquishing, with all paperwork that comes with the dog,
  6) communicate with the HHBCR foster co-ordinator on a regular basis with regard to the state of health and behaviour of the dog.
  
In providing a home for a rescue dog, I understand and accept the inherent risks to myself, my family,
my pets and my home and will not hold HHBCR or its members responsible for any personal injury or
damage to property caused by the foster dog.
